I decided to make my kids their own Advent calendar to count down the days until Christmas. I know a lot of them have candy or toys but ours is fun jobs/activities we get to do each day. It is a great way to anticipate each day of the season, not just the presents.
This week is with the theme of Gingerbread. So far we have made cut out gingerbread boys and girls (the kids liked them so much they each did two). One of the ones we did with glue stick and sprinkled cinnamon on it, very fun and messy! The other one I gave the kids googly eyes and scraps and told them to decorate them. Isaiah’s was a boy monster complete with four eyes (two on the toes), and Ayla’s was a lady gingerbread. We made gingerbread play-doh and that was really fun. The kids made up their own cookie shop and took turns being the baker. We took our homemade play-doh recipe and added ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and just shook until they were done shaking. We also did some phonemic awareness with gingerbread (I pulled out of my Christmas teaching tub), it was fun to hear them get so involved with that. We are getting ready to make our own gingerbread house and a gingerbread paper dolls, as well as a gingerbread felt game. There are many great gingerbread books, we like The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett. Happy creating!
