How Does Your Garden Grow?

We are finally passed the freezing point here so it is safe to plant our garden…sort of.  We have an issue of lack of space in our new yard, so we were creative and used several pots this year!  It was a lot of fun.  The kids each picked some things they wanted to plant.  Isaiah chose cilantro, since he wants to make Chipotle rice!  Ayla wanted peppers since she LOVES them.  We also decided to plant tomatoes, sugar snap peas, basil, and spinach.  Yummy.  I hope we have a great harvest.  Here are some ideas while planting your own family garden.

* Dig for worms and other bugs to add to your garden, talk about how worms help dig holes to irrigate the soil and make it good for planting.  We did this and put lots of extra worms in our pots.  We did our own worm dig, the kids refused to hold them with their bare hands, but with gloves or shovels they were all in!

* Talk about the seeds.  The kids had fun looking at the different types of seeds and were shocked that some of them were so tiny!  We compared them, counted them, and had lots of fun planting them.

* What do our plants need to survive?  We talked about why they need water and sun and soil.  We also saw a squirrel and some birds coming over to our plants, so we might end up making a bird feeder since we don’t want them to eat all our seeds.

Happy Planting!
