What do Ants Eat?
We decided to do this experiment to see what ants would like to eat. We took a paper plate and divided it into pie slices and put a different food in each section. The kids were very thoughtful about what we put out. Syrup? No the ants might get stuck in it. Starburst candy? No the ants might not be able to lift it. We settled on popcorn, sweet tart candy, cereal, macaroni, pistachio nuts, and raisins.
The results were interesting, the popcorn was gone first, although it could have been our bird friends! The macaroni and sweet tarts were left. We went outside several times to see if we could catch the ants in action…however due lack of bugs here, we never saw the ants. We did this last year when we lived in Illinois and it was amazing how many ants came out. Hundreds of them, here, we really didn’t see any. Oh well! We had fun making predictions and trying to catch the ants taking the food.
